Test case 18636

Apache Tomcat directory traversal via mod_jk, corresponding to CVE-2007-0450.

Vulnerability summary

Directory traversal vulnerability in Apache HTTP Server and Tomcat 5.x before 5.5.22 and 6.x before 6.0.10, when using certain proxy modules (mod_proxy, mod_rewrite, mod_jk), allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a .. (dot dot) sequence with combinations of (1) "/" (slash), (2) "\" (backslash), and (3) URL-encoded backslash (%5C) characters in the URL, which are valid separators in Tomcat but not in Apache.

What this test case checks

This test case covers the Apache Tomcat directory-traversal issue exposed when fronted by Apache HTTP Server with mod_jk or mod_proxy_ajp. A request whose path contains certain percent-encoded sequences is normalized differently by the front-end and the back-end, allowing access to files outside the intended document root. The issue affects multiple Tomcat versions and is fixed by upgrading the connector and applying URI normalization at the front-end.
